Identifying Policies that Help Refugees and Host Communities Thrive

Reducing poverty and improving equity
Apr 11, 2024 | Center for Global Development

When refugees fleeing conflict and persecution arrive in a new country, they need immediate humanitarian support. Once their basic needs are satisfied, the challenge is how to promote refugees’ socioeconomic integration so they canadapt to and succeed in their new communities? In their paper for the Center for  Global Development, Dany Bahar ,Rebecca Brough and Giovanni Peri note that thisquestion is often considered secondary as refugees are often viewed astemporary guests, especially when residing in countries that are close neighboursof the country they fled. While reviewing theseinterventions the authors organize the evidence separately for developed and developingcountries to emphasize the structural differences that dominate the two verydifferent settings.
