It’s Time for the World Bank to Break with Tradition - The Bank Must Adopt a New Model to Alleviate Extreme Poverty.

Reducing poverty and improving equity
Apr 24, 2024 | Foreign Policy

Since the 1990s, the World Bank hasfacilitated a dramatic decline in extreme poverty globally, from more than onein three people living in extreme poverty in 1990 to less than one in 10 today. But fragile and conflict-affected countries, such as the Democratic Republic ofthe Congo and Myanmar, have seen the opposite trend, suggests David Miliband inhis Foreign Policy article. The convergence of conflict, climate change, and economic shocks has left more than 300 million people dependent onhumanitarian aid to survive. As the landscapeof poverty changes, the World Bank will need to adopt a more flexibleapproach by expanding delivery of its services through non-governmentalpartners, which can often better access communities in need.
