Safeguarding Subsea Cables: Protecting Cyber Infrastructure amid Great Power Competition

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Aug 26, 2024 | Center for Strategic and International Studies

The roughly 600 cables currently operational or planned worldwide, spanning approximately 1.2 million kilometers, are the world’s information superhighways and provide the high-bandwidth connections necessary to support the rise of cloud computing and integrated 5G networks, transmitting everything from streaming videos and financial transactions to diplomatic communications and essential intelligence. In their report for the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Daniel Runde, Erin Murphy, and Thomas Bryja voice concerns that Chinese cable repair companies could tap undersea data streams, map the ocean floor to conduct reconnaissance on Western military communication links, or obtain specific location data to allow belligerent parties to cut cables with speed and precision. https://csis-website-prod.s3.amazonaws.com
