Keep it Moving: From Mobility to Logistics in European Defence
It has been said that “amateurs discuss tactics, while professionals discuss logistics”, but military logistics do not get the political attention they deserve, notes Daniel Fiott in his
CSDS Policy Brief. “Mobility” here relates to the timely movement of soldiers and equipment across Europe, but this does not take adequate account of crucial reflections on basing, depots and protection. While mobility is relevant, it is but one facet of military logistics. The author argues that any reinvigoration of “military mobility” cannot be made solely through more money or making dual-use transport investments – as important as these are. Instead, there is a need to rethink how the Union approaches military logistics. If Europeans are serious about making more of a contribution to European defence through the EU and NATO, then practical cooperation in logistics could be a wise place to start.
