International Cooperation for the Decarbonization of Energy-intensive Industries: Unlocking the Full Potential

Improving global governance
Sep 30, 2024 | Taylor & Francis Group

In this article, published by the Taylor & Francis Group, Simon Otto and Sebastian Oberthür investigate the state of global governance for the deep decarbonization of energy-intensive industries (EIIs), and identify options for mobilizing the potential of global governance. Their focus is directed at four main EIIs - iron and steel, cement and concrete, chemicals, and aluminium. They argue that the main barrier to addressing evident needs is rooted in (geo)politics rather than a lack of suitable institutions. Consequently, the need for effective governance of EII decarbonization may best be advanced by incrementally developing existing institutions, rather than creating major new ones. https://www.tandfonline.com
