Dollars and Sense: America’s Interest in a Ukrainian Victory

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jan 16, 2025 | American Enterprise Institute

Among the most crucial decisions the US must make will be whether and how to continue aid to Ukraine in its fight against Russia. Elaine McCusker, Frederick Kagan, and Richard Sims argue in their paper for the American Enterprise Institute that though many US citizens are confused and concerned about the cost of this aid, they should focus instead on what not helping Ukraine would cost. By providing aid to Kyiv, the US is preventing Russia from directly menacing eastern and central Europe - something that would doubtlessly consume more US resources. To provide context on the aid the US is providing to Ukraine, the authors estimate the cost of a world in which the US stops providing aid and Russia defeats Ukraine. https://www.aei.org
