Greenland – A New American State?

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Jan 17, 2025 | Open Canada

General elections for Greenland’s parliament, the Inatsisartut, are set for this spring and US President elect Trump’s renewed interest in purchasing Greenland will undoubtedly become part of the electoral debate, notes Jan Top Christensen in this Open Canada article. There have already been discussions about the U.S. offering Greenland a Compact of Free Association (COFA) under which the U.S. provides for defence, funding grants, and access to U.S. social services for citizens of COFA territories. In return, the U.S. is granted land for military bases and to station troops and can exclude other militaries from entering any COFA territory. Greenland’s chief politician, Mute Egede, in his New Year’s speech, hinted that a referendum on Greenland’s full independence may be close. https://opencanada.org
