The Continuing Ban on Girls’ Education in Afghanistan

Sharing core norms and values
Apr 01, 2025 | Development Policy Centre

The ruling Taliban deem that the global education curriculum does not align with Islamic principles and Afghan culture. They claim that modern education promotes western culture and values. The ban on girls’ education persists not only to demonstrate who is in control in Afghanistan, while those with conservative ideologies argue that a woman’s place is solely within the household. However, Matiullah Qazizada asserts in her blog for the Development Policy Centre that the claims that this belief is widespread are not valid, and that the vast majority of Afghans reject it, recognising the ban’s devastating effects on individuals, families, the economy and the nation’s well-being. The ban also leads to an increase in early marriages, heightens gender inequality, suppresses the emergence of female leaders and contributes to high maternal mortality. https://devpolicy.org
