BRICS Expansion and the Future of World Order: Perspectives from Member States, Partners, and Aspirants

Improving global governance

The expansion of the BRICS+ coalition has been heralded as a defining moment in the creation of a post-Western global order. However, given the diversity of the aspirations and goals of BRICS+ member states, it is unclear whether the BRICS+ members can coalesce around a shared vision of a post-Western global order. A key uncertainty lies in whether BRICS+ signals a turn away from the West, or a turn against the West. To address these questions, Carnegie’s Stewart Patrick and Erica Hogan solicited commentaries from prominent experts in each of the member countries, and several current partner countries or potential future members to analyse what BRICS+ membership means for each country’s aspirations, the impacts it expects, and how international trends might shape the future of the association. https://go.carnegieendowment.org/ODEzLVhZVS00MjIAAAGZnDbHzkn3PCfamNZ05WcS9j6XHNVxUEHNCVbtMcTMyNx7kxKaCcNkI7mpcQtoaSQaRcKZ1GQ=
