Liberation and Its Discontents

Delivering sustainable economic growth
Apr 09, 2025 | Council on Foreign Relations

The approach adopted after World War II ushered in an era of unprecedented American economic prosperity and outperformance, which attracted foreign investment, spurred innovation, and helped create a durable network of allies and partners that enabled the United States to project immense power around the world. The question is whether whatever alternative system now emerges after President Trump has imposed the broad range of Liberation Day tariffs will produce similar benefits for US citizens, let alone the rest of the world. To make more sense of Liberation Day, Michael Froman asked several of the Council on Foreign Relations’ authorities to express their views on trade and tariffs-related matters,  the history of U.S. economic policy, and how countries are reacting in the aftermath of President Trump’s new directives. https://www.cfr.org
