The Four Big Questions Shaping Democracy in Africa

Sharing core norms and values
Apr 10, 2025 | Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Although 2025 offers a more modest slate of elections in Africa than the 2024 "year of elections," it has significant consequences for Africa's democratic trajectory. Democracy's supporters will try to resist executive power grabs; post-coup governments will chart an unclear path; countries with aging leaders will face an inevitable transition. Frances Brown suggests in her article for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace that four big questions will shape democratic pathways in Africa over 2025 and beyond: whether newly elected governments can deliver for their populations; whether the trend of executive power grabs can be mitigated; how post-coup political trajectories will unfold; and what will come next in countries facing inevitable transfers of power.  https://carnegieendowment.org
