How to Advance U.S.-Africa Critical Minerals Partnerships in Mining and Geological Sciences
Critical minerals, such as nickel, graphite, manganese, cobalt, copper, and lithium, now occupy a central role in global economic and geopolitical competition. Demand for these minerals is projected to skyrocket over the coming years, driven primarily by increased demand for renewable energy and electric mobility technologies. Zainab Usman and Alexander Csanadi note in their article for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace that as the U.S. seeks to diversify its supply sources away from “adversary nations,” technical exchange partnerships with African countries could be a key driver of resilient and secure minerals supply chains. Through this, policymakers can leverage U.S. and African comparative advantage for mutually beneficial partnerships.
