The Role of the Private Sector in the Global Health Agenda
Due to the recent evolution of international relations, development cooperation policies are facing new daunting challenges. Strengthening the role of private investors is a key avenue to ensure that present and future programmes are adequately funded. Marianna Lunardini and Matteo Bursi argue in their article for the
Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) that the involvement of the private sector in global health will contribute significantly to the efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 of the United Nations’
2030 Agenda. As highlighted in this paper, private companies can help improve healthcare systems in LMICs not only through financial support, but through knowledge sharing and the training of local personnel. In addition to addressing philanthropic reasons for investment, their engagement can also be stimulated by an economic interest in ensuring business continuity and strengthening their presence in regions with significant demographic and economic potential.
