The Climate Paradox: Why We Need to Reset Action on Climate Change
Despite the past 15 years having seen an explosion in the availability of renewable energy and electric vehicles having become the fastest-growing sector of the vehicle market - with China leading the way in both - demand for and production of fossil fuels has risen and is set to rise further up to 2030. Though action by the developed world is essential, by 2030 almost two-thirds of global emissions will come from China, India and South-East Asia. Yet the global financial flows for renewable energy in the developing world have fallen in the past few years, notes Lindy Fursman in her article for the
Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. These facts mean that any strategy based on either “phasing out” fossil fuels in the short term or limiting consumption is doomed to fail. The climate movement needs a public mandate, attainable by shifting from protest to pragmatic policy. There’s a new coalition to build; one that unites disillusioned activists with technologists, and policymakers who are ready to act.
