The Odd Couple: Women Peacebuilders and Security Sector Actors - Bridging Positions, Building Trust

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
May 23, 2025 | International Civil Society Action Network

The security sector needs to engage peacebuilders and communities to assess security threats and priorities so as to inform policy and practice. This report by Sanam Naraghi Anderlini and Isabela Karibjanian for the International Civil Society Action Network underscores the importance of multi-sectoral approaches to implementing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. These focus on the empowerment of women in both the security sector and civil society organisations. The report captures discussions, initiatives, and actionable recommendations by headlining three core areas of work between the two sectors: Addressing the Threat of Violent Extremism; Reframing and Reforming the Security Sector; and Confronting Election-related Violence. Together, they widen the focus from limited concepts of state security anchored in militarized responses to direct attention to human security, and the lived realities, needs, and priorities of communities. https://icanpeacework.org
