The AU-EU Partnership: Closer Ties or Common Worries?

Improving global governance
Jun 06, 2025 | European Centre for Development Policy Management

There will be several occasions this year where the EU and the AU will have to prove the global relevance and value of their partnership, from the G20 summit in South Africa to COP30 in Brazil. The AU-EU partnership has been a significant development in international relations, with both continents working towards closer ties and shared interests. However, Virginia Mucchi, head of ECDPM's Outreach and Impact Department, argues, the relationship also faces challenges and uncertainties. The recent ministerial meetings have highlighted the need for a more robust and sustainable partnership, with a focus on security, prosperity, and migration. The upcoming AU-EU Summit in 2025 aims to address these concerns and move forward with the Joint Vision for 2030. The partnership's success will depend on the ability to balance these interests and address the common concerns that may arise in the future https://ecdpm.org
