Women and Girls in Conflict and Displacement in Muslim Settings
The number of people displaced by conflict and climate has reached unprecedented levels, with many generated by and hosted in Muslim-majority countries, especially in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa and the Sahel region. Violence is perpetrated by various actors including the state, police, border guards, coast guards, soldiers, armed groups, traffickers, smugglers, strangers, other refugees and family members. In her Policy Briefing for the
University of Birmingham, Sandra Pertek sheds light on the urgent and often overlooked realities faced by displaced women and girls across Muslim-majority regions. Global displacement had reached record levels - over 120 million in 2025, with women and girls being disproportionately affected. The report introduces the concept of a spiral continuum of violence, encompassing direct, structural, cultural, and gender-based harms that intensify over time and across displacement journeys.
