Financing the Africa We Want? Reflections from the 2025 Ibrahim Governance Weekend

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Dec 05, 2025 | Governance and Social Development Resource Centre

The 2025 Ibrahim Governance Weekend (IGW), an annual event organized by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, was held in Marrakech. In this article for the Governance and Social Development Resource Centre (GSDRC),  Arol Dut notes that participants found that Africa’s economic sovereignty remains distant, constrained by weak institutions, heavy reliance on external funding, and limited industrial output. The total estimated debt burden is over US$1.1 trillion - a sum that has nearly doubled over the last decade, although Africa is not the most indebted region. The author’s key proposal is that the continent’s focus should no longer be diagnosing its problems but understanding why they remain unresolved. https://gsdrc.org
