The Anatomy of Displacement

Addressing vulnerability and promoting security
Dec 19, 2025 | Danish Institute for International Studies

Displacement is a strategy, not a humanitarian side effect of a conflict, suggest Ahlam Chemlali and Lars Erslev Andersen in their report for the Danish Institute for International Studies. They examine the structural nature of displacement across Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon and argue that displacement is not a humanitarian side effect of conflict, but a deliberate and recurring strategy of Israeli governance, rooted in decades of military control. They note that from the mass expulsions of 1948 to the blockade of Gaza and the ongoing destruction since October 2023, displacement has functioned as a mechanism to fragment Palestinian society, reshape demography and consolidate territorial control. https://pure.diis.dk
